Welcome June Calder!

We welcomed June Josephine Calder into our home on October 7th (she surprised us by coming 2 weeks early).  I was actually out of town for business when my water broke--luckily my husband had been invited to part of the trip so he was there too. We were only an hour or so away from home, but it made things exciting!

I've been updating our blog with the story of labor/delivery and the first days of her life.

We are still living in Geneva, Switzerland and loving it. I was working for a medical device company (TriVascular) providing training to physicians and employees for our AAA endovascular stent graft. I miss nursing, but this job just fell into my lap and has been an amazing international medical/business opportunity. 

For now, I'm a mom. Swiss government mandates 14 weeks of maternity leave (awesome!). After that's over I'll probably work a few hours per week from home.

McDaniel update

Hi Friends,

I miss you all and I hope you are all doing well! This is my update. After nursing school I worked pediatrics for Timpanogos Hospital, but when my husband Josh got into law school at UCLA-we took off for Los Angeles. I haven't worked since, but am quite busy as the Relief Society President in my ward getting called all of the time to look at all of the kid's ear infections, rashs, you name it! Los Angeles is awesome, but we are very busy. Somehow we still find time to make it to Disneyland pretty often. Josh got a job downtown at a firm called Munger Tolles and Olsen, so when he graduates this year he will start there in the Fall. Caden is now 2 1/2 years old and just started preschool! He's getting so big. Brielle is 10 months old.

Update...

Hey everyone,
    Just thought I'd give a little shout out and say hi to all of you and give you a little update.  Where to start... I don't think I've written on this for ages...
First things first, I got hitched to Tyler Bradshaw in January of 2010... nursing wise, I was working at my DREAM job on the Immunocompromised Unit at Primary Children's Hospital... I miss it, so much!

Then we moved to Wisconsin for my husband to go the University of Wisconsin to get his PhD in Medical Physics... Nursing wise... I have a job at an adult oncology clinic being a chemo and triage RN (love the clinic life), and I also work part-time at one of the hospitals here as a float nurse... don't love this as much but its a job right? (below a pic of us in Chicago, its about 2 1/2 hours from Madison)

And now we are expecting our first little lady in November (this picture was taken at 24 weeks, I'm now about 32 weeks), and nursing wise I will be nursing a baby!... dumb joke... but seriously, thats what i'll be doing and working 2 shifts a week or so ...

So that is about it from us... we are just living up the student life for the next 4-5 years and so far we've really enjoyed our time here in Wisconsin.  We are so so so excited to have this little girl, I can't wait to meet her. Amanda Brannock's update!

Great idea to update the blog! Can everyone believe it's been almost 3 years since we graduated? Doesn't it seem like yesterday? But so much has happened in those 3 years!!! :)

I am still working part-time nights in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. Richard finishes dental school next year. The joy of our life (WESTON) is almost 2 1/2 years old! He is full of energy and so much fun! He is my BEST FRIEND! :) It still breaks my heart every weekend to leave him and go to work. He is WONDERFUL!

And our exciting news to share...We're expecting a BABY GIRL! McKenzie Diana Brannock is due March 4, 2012. We feel so blessed!

It's a WONDERFUL LIFE and we just cherish every day together as a little family.

Thanks Aubrey for thinking about posting updates. I've seen what some of everyone is up to through Facebook and blogs but I thought keeping this blog going was great!

As my pictures were loading I thought how I left off things from graduation to marriage but I'm too lazy to start over so I'll sum it up by saying I should have spent all my money and go on exotic vacations before getting married. Now I just work and visit family during vacation!

I married Scott Lee on June 26, 2010 and it's been an awesome year. He's going to Stanford for his PhD in electrical engineering. He graduated from the U of U though and he bleeds RED. Sometimes I sing the fight song or wear BYU shirts just to give him a hard time. Too bad I couldn't rub a football victory in his face...

We went to San Diego for Liz's wedding and it was so fun. Even more exciting is that she's moving about 20 minutes away from us next week! I'm totally excited to hang out again.

I'm working as an outpatient surgery center and loving it: no nights, weekends, holidays, or call. (Sometimes I think I'd like to change fields but I'm not sure I could get the same hours.) I was circulating and a co-worker thought I looked so awesome he decided to take a picture. Nursing's hot!

Last season we were avid Stanford football fans and look forward to another awesome year. Andrew Luck is awesome and we're hoping he can throw us to victory this season! (This is the nail biting game when we beat USC. It was tense until the last second.)

We were driving back from a very nice Christmas visit with Scott's family and got hit by a semi and tractor trailer. Woops! Scott and I were fine but the truck didn't come out looking pretty.

We went to a clam chowder competition in Santa Cruz and tried quite the variety of soup. Our favorite was from a rest home!

In the spring I went with my mom to visit my sister in Atlanta. We were there for the last weekend of the open house and now she's working in the temple. Lucky! It was so fun to see her digs and hang out.

In June Scott had a paper accepted to a conference in Beijing, China so we went a week early to see the sights. China is such a different experience than anything you can imagine. Seriously, NO ONE speaks English. It was so great but I was very happy to be home.

Also this summer we went to Utah and visited with Ivana & Wade Shearer. So fun!

Last weekend we went to Yosemite and somehow only ended up with pictures that include crutches! It was beautiful to be there and so relaxing to only do easy hikes. I loved it!

Congrats if you read all the writing but I sort of figured that most people are really just interested in pictures so I tried to put up a variety. Life is good and I hope that everyone is doing well. If you're interested anyone is welcome to visit my blog: scottandcecilie.blogspot.com

Hi Friends,

I was visiting my blog today and saw our nursing blog WAY down the list of recently updated blogs. I thought it'd be fun if everyone were to write a paragraph (heck, a sentence!) of what they're up to, where they're at, and if/where they're working. Sound good?

We're living in Houston. Ella Grace was born in March and is, as you might expect, the love of our lives. I quit my job as a mother/baby nurse when she was born but think I'll start with a staffing agency working once or twice a month when she gets to be a year or so. We're closing on a home this week, and I can't wait to put my years of watching HGTV to good use:) Life is good and I miss my nursing buddies!

McDaniel Baby #2

Hi Everyone! I hope your holidays were wonderful, I miss you all. I just wanted to share the good news that Baby #2 is here. Brielle Julie McDaniel was born on December 5th, 2010 at 4:42pm. She was 8 Ibs 12 oz and 20 1/2 inches long. Much smaller than her brother so I am very happy. The labor was perfect, only 9 hours, epidural worked perfectly and I slept through most of it. She came out in only 3 pushes. The only bad part was that I got a kidney stone the week after I had her, and it's true what they say- just about as painful as labor. We are all healthy and happy and Cade loves being a big brother. Here are some pictures of our princess and our family.

Switzerland!

Here is a little update from the Calders (Allison Gatrell Calder):
My husband and I moved to Geneva, Switzerland last month. I am still in the process of getting my license recognized by the government here, but I hope to work as a nurse soon.

Geneva is absolutely beautiful!! If you ever have a chance (or need an excuse) to come to Europe, our home is always open. Hope all is going well!!!

The temple in Bern

At the UN headquarters in Geneva. I have been fortunate to meet some people and participate in a group involved in the advancement of Mental and Psychosocial Health awareness in the international health organisations. With this, I'll get to attend some meetings for the WHO and also the Human Rights Commission. There are some amazingly intelligent people here in Geneva.

Kalie inspired me to pass along my good news too. Wayne and I are getting married September 10th in the Portland, OR temple!

CEUs

Let me share my gem of information with you about continuing education units! The easiest way I've found for earning CEUs is by going to www.netce.com. If you're wanting to earn hours by doing CEUs, I would seriously check this website out!

Also, I found out that you keep track of CEUs the same way you do with working hours. Keep documentation of all your hours in case you are audited. I guess the honor code is still in force. :)

My New Guy

Hello my dear friends!

I wanted to let you know about our new addition! I had a baby boy on February 15th, and we named him Hyrum. He is the sweetest little guy! I gave birth without pain medication (SO worth it ladies!) 1 hour and 26 minutes after AROM. If you want to read more, check out my blog. You'll find out why I wanted to go natural, and all that jazz.

Hope everyone is doing well and prospering in their respective lives and professions! If you have announcements, let's hear them!

Any Houston-dwellers out there?

We're moving to Houston at the end of the month and I've been wanting to start looking for a job. It seems like there are an endless amount of job postings so I'm turning to my nursing buddies for help: What hospital do you work at, days/nights, do your rotate Sunday shifts, what's an average starting salary for the area, what department do you work in?? I have lots of questions and if anyone lives in Houston and could help a sister out, let me know! :)

Hi my name is Brooke Ruehl, I am the one doing the dissertation study with nurses. The study is designed to look at the effects that writing might have on stress, with nurses. I am recruiting nurses that work with either Pediatric Hem/Onc patients, Pediatric Intensive Care patients, Neonatal Intensive Care patients, or who work in Emergency Departments. To qualify for the study you have to be currently working at least 30 hours week in one of those above areas, for at least the past 3 months. Nursing Stress Study

The Psychological and Physical Health Effects of Writing In Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Intensive Care, and Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing Staff.

The primary aim of this study is to investigate the effects of two types of journal writing on stress. Participants will be asked to complete several self-report questionnaires on 3 separate occasions, spaced several weeks apart. You will also be asked to complete 3 journal writing sessions, each 25-35 minutes.

• Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two writing groups.
• Participation will last 10 weeks, which includes the 6 week follow-up.
• Participants will complete questionnaires and 3 writing sessions.

Inclusion Criteria:

• Participants must be employed as a nurse in the same nursing field for at least 3 months. Must hold a LVN, RN, or ASN, BSN, or MSN degree.
• Primary practice is in clinical nursing.
• Primary population treated are pediatric patients or emergency room and psychiatric patients.
• Must work on a Hematology/Oncology Inpatient or Outpatient Unit, Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU, Emergency Department, or Psychiatric Unit.

The cold continues

I stole Chris's hat so I was a bit warmer than him. What a nice honey!

Now that is a great show of Christmas and school spirit :-)

We had great seats for the game.

Chris loves sports of all kind but he especially loves football and basketball. This past December he convinced me to go to the Las Vegas Bowl. It did not really take too much to convince me because I like sports a lot as well. He are a few of the highlights from our trips.

We went to a buffett at the Rio Grande. It was huge and as you can see by Chris below we were SUPPER SUPPER full. I usually don't like to go to buffetts because I feel like I have to eat a lot to justify the cost, but just this once it was a blast.

We got to the game just on time for the kick off and boy it was windy. You can see the markers on the field goal standing straight up. We pretty much froze or little bums off.

1 Year...Congratulations!!!!

Hey all,
I have just been thinking this week that I can't believe it has already been a year since we were all going to our last class of our undergraduate career and saying goodbye as we headed off to the next chapter in our life. Last year at this time most of us were still in Provo and now a year later we are spread all over the world. I know that I feel that in this short year I have grown and learned so much (don't worry, I still have a lot more to learn) and I am sure that you feel the same way too. Sometimes it feels like just yesterday that we all met in the Benson building for the first class of our Nursing experience and started to get to know one another, and at other times it feels like an entire lifetime ago. I know that those 2 1/2 years were wonderful years for me, mostly because I got to get to know all of you and work with you toward becoming nurses. Thanks for letting me share those years with you, and here's to all of us finding success wherever our road takes us this next year. (I know, I know, this is really sappy, but it just had to be said).
